SAVE THE DATE: NISE Lecture 3 November 2022, Antwerp.

Michel Krielaars* will be the speaker of the next NISE Lecture “Everything for the motherland. Russian nationalism as a means to stay in power”. Mr. Krielaars will survey Putin’s nationalist policy since the beginning of his rule in 2000 until today.

The lecture will take place on Thursday 3 November at 18h, at the  prestigious Nottebohm room of the Hendrik Conscience Library, in Antwerp

The lecture, in English, is open to the public but registration is needed. Please register by sending an email to info@nise.eu before Monday 31st of October. 

After the lecture a reception will be offered. 

*Michel Krielaars is a historian with a specialization in Slavic Studies and Russian history, a prominent journalist and chief editor of the “Books” section of the Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad.

CfP: NISE-Conference 2023

“Nationalism and World Fairs” will be next year’s conference theme.


NISE launches the Call for Papers for its 2023 conference which will be held in Vienna, from the 30th of May until the 1st of June, on the topic of “Nationalism and World Fairs”.

200-500-word outlines for proposed papers can be submitted to NISE, c/o the coordinator, at eva.bidania@nise.eu.

Submmission deadline: 31 October 2022.

CfP: State of Nationalism

SoN, the comprehensive, online and open source guide for the study of nationalism, encourages contributions from both early career and established researchers on key themes in the study of nationalism (with a focus on concepts rather than on particular national movements).

NISE Award 2023

1000 Euro for the best PhD Thesis on nationalism or national movements in Europe.

The NISE Award is an international scientific honor given to authors of thesis’ that contribute to a deeper historical understanding of nationalism and nationalist movements in Europe from the XVIII century onwards.

The first NISE Awards will be awarded in November 2023 to the best PhD Thesis.

ADELE- Network of Archives of the languages of France

NISE member CRBC, in partnership with CIRDOC, has recently launched ADELE, a network of archivists and librarians working on regional languages in France. HERE (in FR only) further details about the points that will be discussed by the network.

Save the date: 5-7 April 2022. “Nationalism and Media” international conference.

The international conference on “Nationalism and media” will take place on 5-7 April 2022 in Antwerp (Belgium).  NISE and ASEN organise this event together with the University of Antwerp and Ghent University.
