NISE Lecture 2024

The rapid rise of populist parties around the world shows that nationalism is a global phenomenon. Even in earlier periods, nationalist expressions in different parts of the world showed great similarities. Nationalism should therefore be studied as a global phenomenon. In this lecture, historian Eric Storm will discuss his recent book Nationalism: A World History (Amsterdam 2024). He not only discusses the main results of his research on the development of
nationalism from the early modern period to the present, but also reflects on the main lessons to be drawn from it. Who actually belong to the nation? How national is the nation-state? What role does nationalism play in everyday life? And does the nation-state still have a future in a time of climate change?

Eric Storm is Associate Professor at Leiden University. He is an expert in the field of Spanish history, but has also done years of comparative research into the construction of regional and national identities.
