On 15 and 16 February 2012 NISE organized the workshop Building cultural nations. The matica and equivalent intermediary structures in Europe, in collaboration with the Central European University (CEU) and the SPIN project (University of Amsterdam). This scientific meeting was held in Budapest.
From January 1, 2012, a new organizational tier is being introduced within NISE, allowing Associated Members to participate with all its activities on an ad hoc basis.
The first issue of a new NISE series called Proceedings is now available. It presents the results of the first NISE conference; the publication concerns itself with the first subject of data entry into the database and (mainly) the archival situation for national movements.
The Scientific Council welcomes Diana Mishkova as new member. Alan Sked has left the council.
